Riding through the Imperial Sand Dunes was an experience like no other. The wind was blowing “unusually” hard (around 30-45 mph). I was getting pelted with sand, and when cars or trucks passed me it was twice as bad. I think I was cleaning sand out of my eyeballs for 2 days. It was nice at times, because the wind was at my back a lot, and helped get me along. Toward the end of my day, I got the exhilaration of riding on roller-coaster type roads. The climbs were steep, but so were the downhills. At one point I got up to 48 mph. This is what makes the tough stuff worth it. The feeling of being free, wind at your back, and even though you have hills to climb you should have enough positive momentum to make the steep hills seem easy.

Glamis, CA store – This is the place where dune buggies are rented and other “fun” sand things happen. This is a total guy place where even the women look like men.

Quick….sand or rain!? Well you will have many experiences to ponder before it’s over. Great going…are you on schedule?
No, we are not on schedule. We have had 4 major water leaks in the RV. We have spent 2 days getting parts and repairing 3 out of 4. Hopefully we can get the other fixed before we have to move on. I have both bikes in a shop that my friend owns. They are going to get all the sand out of my gears/chains, put new brakes on one, and do some basic maintenance for me. I will hub out from here to get going again, as soon as my bicycles are done! This journey is turning out different that I planned. Stressful at times, frustrating at times (I have cried 3 times in the last week, and I hardly ever cry), and it has also been so exhilarating and magnificent at times. This trip is about getting across the country on my bicycle, but it is more about the journey I will take within. Thanks Ruby, for your insight, and for following me. This has been fun learning who you are through this process, as well.
